Sail Racing Rules

ISAF International Sailing Federation

Sail racing has rules, lots and lots of rules.  While complex, the rules for sail racing are well organized.  It starts with the ISAF, International Sailing Federation. The ISAF is made up of member nation sailing associations which elect members to run the ISAF.  Each nation in turn has racing rules to govern its own member racing associations and classes of boats.

US SAILING
The US SAILING organization applies the ISAF rules in US based races. It also oversees the US Olympic sailing team, selection and financing of the team in the Olympics. Any rules changes US sailors want to make are made to US SAILING which submits to ISAF for approval.

America's Cup
International sail boat races have their own rules and regulations but these based on the ISAF yacht racing rules. America's Cup is an example of classic match racing rules with a race course fixed according to wind direction.  Here you can look at the setup of the race course.  Two boats enter, one boat leaves.

The Vendee Globe
An international race that is based on international sail racing rules but these are for an offshore, around the world race. The boats have special rules regarding construction, the ability to handle the huge seas of the Southern Ocean, and safety equipment, the ability to try and save the sailors life in the event the ocean overcomes the ship.
